A four-run first inning helped the visiting Baltimore Orioles earn a 5-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday, ending Boston's 15-game winning streak.

The winning streak was the longest in the majors since St. Louis won 17 in a row in 2021. Had Boston won, the Red Sox would have set a franchise record for consecutive victories. They tied the 1946 club's record of 15 straight with a 6-3 win in Game 1. Boston had not lost since a 10-2 setback against the Washington Nationals on July 1.

Kyle Bradish (7-9) pitched six innings to earn the win. He held the Red Sox to one run on four hits, struck out four and walked one. Yennier Cano, Andrew Kittredge and Tyler Wells each tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the Orioles, who won despite going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The Red Sox were limited to five hits.

Boston starter Eduardo Rivera (0-1) was pulled with two outs in the first inning. He gave up four runs on three hits and walked two. Brayan Bello replaced Rivera and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Red Sox 6, Orioles 3 (Game 1)

Ceddanne Rafaela homered, Jarren Duran drove in three runs and Boston tied a franchise record for consecutive victories with 15 by beating visiting Baltimore in the first game of a split doubleheader.

Boston starter Jake Bennett (6-3) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits. Aroldis Chapman tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his 23rd save of 2026 and 390th overall, tying him for ninth on the all-time list with former Red Sox pitcher Dennis Eckersley.

Dean Kremer (1-3) gave up six runs on eight hits in six innings. Rafaela, Caleb Durbin and Willson Contreras each collected two hits for the Red Sox, who never trailed.

Royals 5, Giants 3

Salvador Perez tied George Brett's franchise record with his 317th career homer to trigger a five-run seventh inning that rallied host Kansas City to the victory and the three-game sweep of San Francisco.

Trailing 3-0 with just two hits through six innings, the Royals rallied for five runs in the seventh against starter Landen Roupp and reliever Sam Hentges (1-3). Perez drove in the first two runs with his 437-foot blast. Lane Thomas drove in the final two with a two-out single.

Roupp allowed two runs over six-plus innings with seven strikeouts. Royals starter Seth Lugo (4-6) allowed three runs and three hits over seven innings, then Steven Cruz overcame Casey Schmitt's solo homer in the ninth for his first career save.

Pirates 5, Yankees 3 (10 innings, Game 1)

Jared Triolo hit a tiebreaking RBI single with one out in the 10th inning as Pittsburgh recovered from losing a three-run lead and outlasted host New York in the opener of a split doubleheader.

The Pirates won for the ninth time in 13 games and started their third doubleheader this month by stringing together a rally off Fernando Cruz (4-4). Automatic runner Nick Gonzales advanced to third on a fly ball and Cruz walked pinch hitter Marcell Ozuna. Gonzales scored when Triolo blooped a 1-2 splitter in front of left fielder Cody Bellinger. The Pirates added another run when pinch runner Billy Cook scored on a single to center field by Jake Mangum.

Mason Montgomery (3-3) struck out two in the ninth after getting the final out of the eighth. Gregory Soto stranded automatic runner Amed Rosario at third in a 1-2-3 10th for his 13th save in 18 chances.

Yankees 2, Pirates 0 (Game 2)

Max Fried pitched five innings in a stellar return from the injured list and Jasson Dominguez hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh inning as New York avoided being swept by visiting Pittsburgh in a doubleheader.

New York won for the seventh time in 10 games and avoided getting swept at home in a doubleheader for the first time since May 22, 2022, against the Chicago White Sox.

After throwing just 52 pitches in his only rehab start, Fried was not fully stretched in his first major league start since May 13. Fried struck out seven and walked one in his 57-pitch outing. The left-hander threw seven different pitches, averaged 96 mph with his four-seam fastball and retired the final 12 batters he faced.

Dodgers 9, Phillies 5

Max Muncy hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning, Dalton Rushing and Tommy Edman each drove in three runs, and Los Angeles won the rubber match of a three-game series in Philadelphia.

Rushing hit his own home run and left-hander Eric Lauer (5-5) gave up three runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings while Freddie Freeman and Edman each had three hits for Los Angeles.

Alec Bohm and Bryan De La Cruz hit home runs for the Phillies, who lost their second consecutive home series after the break. Right-hander Aaron Nola (3-8) allowed five runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Brewers 4, Mets 3

No. 9 hitter Joey Ortiz ripped a two-run double, collected three hits and scored twice to fuel Milwaukee to victory over visiting New York.

Christian Yelich had an RBI single in Milwaukee's three-run second inning and a run-scoring triple in the sixth for the Brewers, who captured the decisive contest of the three-game series. Milwaukee has won five of six games since the All-Star break.

Logan Henderson (4-1) allowed two runs on five hits and matched a career high with nine strikeouts over five innings. He also fanned nine batters in his MLB debut against the Athletics on April 20, 2025.

Cardinals 1, Angels 0

JJ Wetherholt hit a home run and four St. Louis pitchers combined on a seven-hitter as the Cardinals blanked Los Angeles to salvage the final game of their three-game series in Anaheim, Calif.

Hunter Dobbins (2-1) picked up the victory, allowing six hits over six innings to pick up his sixth career major league win. The win, just the fifth in the last 15 games for the Cardinals, snapped a season-high matching four-game losing streak for St. Louis.

Wade Meckler and Josh Lowe each had two hits for Los Angeles, which had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Nationals 8, Rockies 0

Luis Garcia Jr. homered, Cade Cavalli tossed six strong innings, and Washington beat Colorado in the rubber game of the series in Denver.

Cavalli (7-4) scattered four hits in six innings. CJ Abrams had four hits and Jorbit Vivas, Nasim Nunez, Dylan Crews and Jose Tena finished with two each for Washington. The Nationals have scored seven or more runs in four of their last six games.

Jake McCarthy doubled to extend his on-base streak to 17 games and Kyle Karros singled and walked twice for Colorado, which finished 2-4 on its homestand. The Rockies committed three errors that resulted in two unearned runs.

Rays 4, Blue Jays 2

Griffin Jax pitched six effective innings as visiting Tampa Bay defeated Toronto to take the first three games of their four-game series.

Jax (6-7) allowed one run on three hits to help the Rays take their third win in a row to open the series. Bryan Baker pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 26th save of the season.

Victor Mesa Jr. had two RBI singles for the Rays, who are 8-1 against the Blue Jays this season, Alejandro Kirk hit a solo home run for the Blue Jays, who are 1-5 on their seven-game homestand.

Tigers 5, Cubs 1

Hao-Yu Lee's three-run home run and a strong outing from starter Keider Montero propelled Detroit past host Chicago to cap a successful road trip for the Tigers.

Detroit finished off a 4-2 road trip with the win, taking two of three in Los Angeles against the Angels and then the same against the Cubs in their first two series after the All-Star break.

Lee's homer broke a 1-1 deadlock in the fourth and the Detroit pitching staff did the rest, holding Chicago off the scoreboard after the first inning. Montero (7-5) led that effort in his first start since June 26, giving up one run in 5 1/3 innings.

Reds 5, Mariners 3

Sal Stewart hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning as Cincinnati defeated host Seattle.

JJ Bleday also went deep and Brady Singer (5-9) pitched 6 2/3 quality innings as the Reds took two of three games in the interleague series, knocking the Mariners out of first place in the American League West. Singer allowed three runs on six hits to win his second straight start.

Emerson Hancock made a quality start for the Mariners, leaving after six innings with a 3-2 lead. The right-hander gave up two runs on five hits.

White Sox 4, Rangers 2

Chase Meidroth went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, Andrew Benintendi added two hits and two RBIs, and Chicago topped host Texas in Arlington, securing its third straight series victory.

Left-hander Anthony Kay set the tone with five strong innings before relievers Jordan Hicks, Grant Taylor and Bryan Hudson combined to retire 12 of the 13 batters they faced with eight strikeouts. Hudson pitched the ninth for his fourth save after Taylor struck out five over two perfect innings.

After Tyler Alexander allowed one run and one hit in two innings as the Rangers' opener, Cal Quantrill (3-3) took the loss after spacing two runs and two hits in three innings.

Diamondbacks 15, Athletics 5

Arizona enjoyed its best game of the season at the plate as it thumped the visiting Athletics to claim the rubber match of their three-game series in Phoenix.

Nine Diamondbacks batters registered hits as the team posted season highs in runs, hits (17) and home runs (five). Arizona also celebrated milestones as catcher James McCann (3-for-4, 3 RBIs) hit his 100th career homer in the fifth inning just two batters before rookie Ryan Waldschmidt (2-for-4, 3 RBIs) cracked his first. Gabriel Moreno hit a solo homer to cap the Diamondbacks' seven-run fifth.

The Athletics dropped to 2-13 in their last 15 as starter Gage Jump (3-6) gave up six runs in 4 2/3 innings on eight hits.

Twins 10, Guardians 6

Brooks Lee hit a three-run homer and had four RBIs and Trevor Larnach added a leadoff blast to go with three RBIs as Minnesota snapped its four-game losing streak with a victory over host Cleveland.

Lee's three-run shot occurred in the fourth inning, when the Twins scored four times to seize a 7-3 lead against Guardians starter Slade Cecconi (4-7). Travis Adams (2-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. The Twins had been outscored 34-9 in their previous four games, all on the road.

Seven-time All-Star Jose Ramirez had two hits, drove in two runs and scored once in his return from a broken left hamate bone for Cleveland. The third baseman had been on the injured list since fracturing his wrist on June 13 against the Detroit Tigers.

Braves 7, Padres 6

Rookie Jim Jarvis ignited a six-run eighth-inning rally with an RBI double and Atlanta hung on to defeat visiting San Diego.

The win gave the Braves a 2-1 lead in the four-game series. Atlanta starter Martin Perez was activated before the game and made his first start since July 5, when he went on the injured list after being struck on the left forearm by a line drive. He threw four scoreless innings, allowing one hit.

San Diego squeezed six innings out of starter Michael King. He gave up one run on five hits. He has allowed one run in each of his last three starts.

Astros 5, Marlins 2

Yordan Alvarez socked his 34th home run in the eighth inning, a tiebreaking two-run shot that lifted Houston to a victory over visiting Miami and a sweep of the three-game interleague series.

Alvarez homered for the third time in the series and leads the majors in that category. He followed a leadoff infield single from Jeremy Pena with an opposite-field shot to left-center off Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara (10-6) that snapped a 2-2 deadlock and sent Miami to its ninth consecutive loss.

Alcantara allowed five runs on nine hits in seven-plus innings. Astros starter Peter Lambert labored through a 25-pitch first inning. He allowed two runs on six hits over six innings.
