One week after he returned from the injured list, Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer will miss more time after he was put back on the 15-day IL on Wednesday with back spasms.

The Blue Jays will fill out the pitching staff by recalling right-hander Chad Dallas from Triple-A Buffalo in advance of Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Scherzer's IL move is retroactive to Sunday. He was activated from the IL last Wednesday after dealing with forearm and ankle injuries. In his lone outing after returning, Scherzer was roughed up for five runs on five hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.

He also struck out four to become the 11th pitcher with 3,500 career strikeouts. His total sits at 3,503.

Scherzer, 41, is 1-4 with a 10.23 ERA over six starts this season. The eight-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young Award winner is 222-121 over 19 seasons and has a 3.27 ERA in 489 appearances (480 starts).

Scherzer has won titles with the Washington Nationals (2019) and Texas Rangers (2023). He arrived in the major leagues in 2008 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and has spent time with the Detroit Tigers (2010-14), Nationals (2015-21), Los Angeles Dodgers (2021), New York Mets (2022-23), Rangers (2023-24) and Blue Jays.

Dallas, 25, made his major league debut June 4 for the Blue Jays and gave up a run in 3 2/3 innings during his lone appearance against the Atlanta Braves.
